I'm going to Europe next week so I've brought a european travel adapter. But I'm also planning a trip to Australia later in the year. Can I use the same travel adapter for both trips?

Yes you do need different adapters and you need different again if your visiting my hometown the U.K and Ireland! Aren't us Britain's annoying hey can't have the same adapters as the rest of europe or the same currency!Nope. Australia uses a different plug.Power outlets in Europe and Australia are different. Europe operates on the Type C, E, and F outlet plugs (UK being the exception using Type G outlet plugs); whereas Australia operates on the Type L outlet plugs. Pictures are provided in the enclosed link (1st link) so you can see them prior to arrival in Europe or Australia. I have the Samsonite Universal Adapter Plug, and have yet to come across a power outlet in which it wasn't compatible with (2nd link).
In addition, please note there are two basic standards for voltage and frequency used in the world. One is the North American standard of 110-120 volts at a frequency of 60 Hz, which uses plugs A and B, and the other is the European standard of 220-240 volts at 50 Hz, which uses plugs C through M. Nowadays most electrical appliances today are already made by the manufacturer to operate on both North American and European standards. In the event they are not, then you will also need to take a dual converter on your travels (3rd and 4th link).
You do not need to worry about the voltage and frequency since Europe and Australia is the same as UK. In your question, it says you purchased a European travel adapter so you'll likely be good for Amsterdam but I'm not sure if it'll work in Australia unless it supports the Type L outlet plugs.
